A larger screen iPhone is only a matter of time. And I see this coming in the first half on 2014. Here is why.
I see Apple introducing a 5” screen device at a special media event during the first half of 2014 in order to disrupt people’s expectation of new iPhones during the fall season. As this is a much lower demand product, they could announce weeks in advance and it wouldn’t necessarly disrupt current iPhone demand.
My thinking is that I expect Apple to follow the same pattern of the Verizon iPhone in January of 2011. Verizon wasn’t expected to be as big as ATT in regard to how many iPhones it could sell. This is still the case today. Apple tend to address the core of its business first then other less important part of it later. A bigger screen iPhone would certainly be a hit but I don’t think it would outsell any of their current iPhones.
Now, for the hardest part, how do you think Apple could name this bigger screen iPhone? Right now, iPhone names follow the generation or iterative nature of the product evolution. The iPad has the mini becase this is a two lines product category. But what happens when you introduce a bigger sibling? Could this be the iPhone 5 HD? The iPhone 6?
