Apple After Steve Jobs

A larger screen iPhone is only a matter of time. And I see this coming in the first half on 2014. Here is why.
I see Apple introducing a 5” screen device at a special media event during the first half of 2014 in order to disrupt people’s expectation of new iPhones during the fall season. As this is a much lower demand product, they could announce weeks in advance and it wouldn’t necessarly disrupt current iPhone demand.
My thinking is that I expect Apple to follow the same pattern of the Verizon  iPhone in January of 2011. Verizon wasn’t expected to be as big as ATT in regard to how many iPhones it could sell. This is still the case today. Apple tend to address the core of its business first then other less important part of it later. A bigger screen iPhone would certainly be a hit but I don’t think it would outsell any of their current iPhones.
Now, for the hardest part, how do you think Apple could name this bigger screen iPhone? Right now, iPhone names follow the generation or iterative nature of the product evolution. The iPad has the mini becase this is a two lines product category. But what happens when you introduce a bigger sibling? Could this be the iPhone 5 HD? The iPhone 6?

March, 2014

While everybody is busy reading rumors of the next iPhone 5S or 5C, I’m thinking of the iPhones beyond those. The idea came up that Apple could introduce another iPhone form factor at a special media event next year around march. Here is why.

I expect that 90% of customers will be satisfied with the current iPhone pipeline. But there is a 10% of customers who are leaving the ecosystem because of the lack of bigger screen iPhones. Bigger screens smartphone are generally high end device and I expect Apple to try lure back these customers.

I expect Apple to introduce a device with a bigger screen but with the same screen resolution in order to keep software developers happy. The downside of this would be the reduced screen’s DPI. But, as bigger screen devices tend to be held further away from the eyes, I expect this to be a small issue.

Finally, introducing this device in the first quarter of 2014 would help keep the momentum for Apple by disrupting expectations from the press.

So what do you think? Does this hold up in your mind too?
