Being Boring and Being Proud of it

How to sum it up?

Nothing Apple announced last week was “boring.” What was announced was stable, cohesive, well-designed, beautiful, iterative, and on many levels, innovative, but not “boring.” What are boring are the proclamations from the bloggers on high who expect Apple to reinvent the wheel every year, when the majority of users don’t want to learn a new UI or button configuration with the arrival of a new moon. Apple shatters expectations when it enters a market, not when it’s already entrenched in one.

The iPhone has been boring for a long long time

So you think the iPhone 5 is boring? Think again. Look back, way back, when the iPhone 3G came out in 2008.  

iPhone 3G (2008)

  • Faster data (3G)
  • GPS
  • (And global availability, if you call that a feature.)
  • iOS 2.0 + App Store

iPhone 3GS (2009)

  • Even faster processor / graphics
  • Better battery life
  • Better camera
  • iOS 3

iPhone 4 (2010)

  • Retina display
  • New slimmer design
  • Even faster processor / graphics
  • New, vastly improved camera.
  • iOS 4

iPhone 4S (2011)

  • Even faster processor / graphics
  • Even better camera
  • Better antennas
  • Faster data
  • Siri
  • iOS 5

iPhone 5 (2012)

  • New slimmer, lighter design
  • Larger screen
  • Even faster processor / graphics
  • New, vastly improved camera
  • Faster data
  • iOS 6

The iPhone by itself was an exciting and disrupting product back in 2007. We cannot expect a disrupting product every year and from the same compagny. That is impossible.

Very interesting article by the way: The iPhone 5 isn’t exciting. Or boring. It’s just plain better.

when we say the iPhone 5 is boring, we really mean the iPhone 5 is safe. It’s familiar. It’s the same phone in slightly different packaging. And, most importantly, it’s still very recognizably the most popular smartphone in the world. If you’ve won the first two legs of the Triple Crown, you don’t suddenly trade in your thoroughbred for a one-eyed pony because it’s more interesting to look at. - Gizmodo Nothing more to add.
