Dear Apple,
Marketing people aren’t designers.
Sincerely,
An iOS user.
Reading The Next Web article today, we get a better idea of what is going on @ Apple with iOS 7 design.
many of the new icons were primarily designed by members of Apple’s marketing and communications department, not the app design teams
Now I understand why the homescreen is currently a visual mess.
It’s also clear from what we’ve seen and heard that what we’re seeing of iOS 7 right now is a ‘mid stride’ snapshot. The work on design and development is still going full tilt, and what was presented this week is firmly a ‘work in progress’
This is encouraging to know. That was my expectation that we will in fact see a lot of refinements between iOS 7 beta releases.
What is more troubling is the fact that Jony Ive couldn’t trust the current visual designers to renew themselves and create something really new. This is a mistake. And this may explain why there is so few references to iOS 6 older design within iOS 7.
And now for something completely different.
The choice of background in these screen shits make it look much more childish than it is necessary. Apple could have chosen something much more subtle and the visuals would have been much better. Fortunately, this is something we’ll be able to do ourselves.

With the grand unveiling of Apple’s next operating system for the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch approaching, sources have provided detailed descriptions of what users and developers alike could expe…Reading today’s article from 9to5mac.com about iOS 7’s new design isn’t very encouraging. I’m not sure at all that I like what I’m reading. I just don’t want a soulless visual language. I don’t want Windows Phone 8 on my iPhone nor my iPad. If Ive thinks that current iOS visuals doesn’t endure the test of time, I think quite the same thing about an all flat design based on black… and white.
Please, tell me that I’m just having a nightmare.
Three years of WWDC announcement icons. I like this year icon with the use of a new font.
At the very least, Facebook Home is a great case study in Android’s potential, created by a company that gets design and also happens to be wildly successful in social media. There are plenty of notes to take here, and I hope Apple is taking some of them.
Agreed.
Don’t get too much excited over a complete and major new UI for iOS 7. Apple has its own definition of “major new release”. Think of iOS 7 as an evolution, not a revolution. And you’ll thank me later.
