In a very good piece from John Gruber:
"This is what only Apple can do:
Software updates that are free of charge and so easily installed that the majority of iOS and Mac users are running the latest versions of the OSes (a supermajority in the case of iOS). Apple can release new features and expect most users to have them within a year — and third-party developers can count on the same thing.”
He is essentially saying the same thing that I was saying in conclusion here:
“Apple has the power to augment their offering with whatever features they think will add value to the ecosystem and nearly overnight millions of users will be using them everyday. That is powerful and a real value in itself.”
Apple doesn’t think about their products as “cheap” or “premium”. They think about the kind of customers they want to attract into their ecosystem. This is the key. They work on three axis: hardware, software, services.
Android has a big problem with pushing new releases to the users as handset manufacturers aren’t always willing to invest resources required to certify new Android releases with all their on market devices. Having carriers in the equation complicated matters. Yet, Android managed to get and stay in front of the innovation curve compared to iOS (as the tech press seems to believe).
How could Apple not take advantage of the control it has of its OS and the enduser device updates and start to be seen as lacking innovative new feature in iOS 6? Apple has the lever to push and transform its ecosystem in a matter of weeks! Yet, the ecosystem as a whole is seen as falling behind Android for lack of truly innovative new features. This is starting to look as a failed opportunity by Apple to stay in front. A major failure.”
