Apple, Stay Focused, Don’t Get Distracted

When I read news about Phil Schiller bashing on Android and indireclty Samsung products, I just hope this is not the start of losing focus at Apple. I think this is not a good idea to bash at others in order to send your message that your products or your things are better. Politicians do this all the time and I hate this.

Microsoft lost focused in the 90s for this reason. They made a lot of products just in respond to others taking lead in emerging markets. One prime example of that is Internet Explorer. They went after Netscape. When Netscape died, they went after AOL. Microsoft lost it eventually when the mobile industry picked and started to replace PCs.

I wish Apple keep their focus at doing great products that shows a perfect union of hardware and software tightly integrated. Don’t chase Android or Samsung. Follow your own destiny. Keep looking ahead.

Apple Goes on the Defensive Against Samsung

I’m not sure which is more strange:

1) That Phil Schiller would say anything the day before a big Samsung event.

2) That Phil Schiller would say anything, period.

3) That Schiller doesn’t mention Samsung, but mentions Android.

4) That WSJ sort of throws him under the bus with their headline (and rightfully so, in this case). It’s so rare for this type of interview; normally you only see one that is heavily teed-up to help Apple in some way. The very lede: “Apple Inc. is on the defensive.” — does not help Apple in any way, shape, or form. Good for WSJ.

5) That this article has two authors — Ian Sherr and Jessica E. Lessin — and it’s less than 300 words.

I guess you could argue that Apple is fighting up here, since Android is “winning” the market share battle. But I fail to see how this statement is a smart maneuver. It makes Apple look vulnerable. Weird.

Agreed. This isn’t an interview at all. It makes me wonder if this whole thing is real.

Apple vs Samsung Trial - My favorites quotes

Yesterday I closely followed the Appl evs Samsung live blogging via the Twitter hashtag #appsung and I was delighted.

Phil Schiller and Scott Forstall were the two interesting man who testified and gave very insightful information on Apple, the creation of the iPhone and of the iPad. Here are my favorites quotes.

Schiller was asked what his first reaction was when seeing Samsung’s first Galaxy S phone:

I was pretty shocked at the appearance of the Galaxy S phone and the extent to which it appeared to copy Apple products and the problems that would create for us.

Scott Forstall answering the question: Did you copy Samsung?

We wanted to build something great. No reason to look at anything they had done.

Scott Forstall on the history of the iPhone creation

For secrecy reasons, Jobs wouldn’t hire anybody from outside of Apple to work on what you’d see on the iPhone screen.

iPhone’s code name was “purple” and locked down building in Cupertino for that purposed, Forstall called the “Purple Dorm” because 24/7 job

The sign outside Apple’s top secret iPhone building said “Fight Club” after the movie, b/c 1st rule was “You don’t discuss F.C.”

I never directed anyone to copy anything from Samsung.

These are gems because we rarely get this kind of information directly from Apple but only via rumours. I think these are even more insightful than Steve Jobs bio. At some point  I even thought this trial was even better than a traditional Apple media event to launch a new product.
